World Bank Promotes Inclusive Connectivity in Lake Chad Area

WASHINGTON, USA, February twentieth 2025-/African Media Agency (AMA)/- The World Bank right this moment authorised $170 million from the International Development Association (IDA) to assist Chad enhance connectivity, logistics, and worth chains with subregional industrial potential within the Lake Chad area.

The Chad Connectivity and Integration Project goals to pave 55 km of the Liwa-Rig Rig part and 12 km of entry roads connecting the town of Bol on the Trans-Saharan Highway. It may even enhance 50 km of rural roads, enhancing market entry for rural areas. The challenge contains constructing solar-powered commerce and agricultural logistics services, like warehouses and markets, to help ladies in Bol, Bagasola, and different areas.

The project aims to improve the efficiency and safety of transport along the Trans-Saharan Highway and the navigability of Lake Chad. This will help stabilize the region, promote economic opportunities, and connect isolated populations to agricultural areas, markets, schools, and health services,” mentioned Clara de Sousa, World Bank Country Director for Chad.  

The Lake Chad area suffers from low social and financial improvement attributable to massive infrastructure gaps, low entry to primary companies, and livelihoods affected by local weather change and battle.

The World Bank will support subregional trade with a focus on gender inclusion by enhancing the capacities of traders, producers, and transport associations, including women’s groups. This effort will particularly target the fisheries and spirulina value chains to improve financial and administrative skills,” mentioned Rasit Pertev, World Bank Country Manager for Chad.

The challenge will profit 3.8 million people, primarily from communities within the Lake Chad area and alongside the Trans-Saharan Highway, together with refugees, internally displaced individuals (IDPs), and producers of native items collaborating in regional worth chain.
