In a remarkable act of community service, Ukpevo Faith, a 24-year-old National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, has embarked on an ambitious project to build a perimeter fence around the Durumi Cemetery in Abuja. The initiative, estimated to cost over N21 million, aims to protect the burial ground from vandalism and restore dignity to the resting place of departed loved ones.
The Accounting graduate from the University of Abuja was inspired to take action after participating in a community cleaning exercise at the cemetery. Moved by the site’s deteriorating condition, she launched the perimeter fencing project to provide long-term protection and promote respect for the dead.
“I was moved to ask questions when I saw the cemetery’s state,” Faith said. “I realized that the lack of funds and manpower were the major obstacles preventing the fence from being built.”
Faith’s project involves securing the 4-hectare Durumi Cemetery with a strong, durable fence to deter trespassing and misuse. The effort has already attracted the attention and support of local leaders, stakeholders, and prospective sponsors. Proposals have been submitted to both organizations and individuals, with encouraging feedback.
“This project is my way of giving back to society and setting an example for future generations,” she added. “I believe every act of kindness is honored by God.”
Faith attributes her drive to her upbringing and the example set by her mother, whom she regards as her role model. She plans to pursue a career in business and accounting, while continuing her philanthropic activities.
The Durumi Cemetery Perimeter Fence Project has received preliminary approval from relevant authorities, and Faith remains hopeful that full funding will be secured soon.
“I just want to see the cemetery become a place of peace and respect. That would make me truly happy.”
