House of Reps Backs Tinubu’s State of Emergency in Rivers, Takes Over Assembly Functions

The House of Representatives has approved President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a State of Emergency in Rivers State, following escalating political tensions and security concerns.

During plenary on Wednesday, 243 lawmakers supported the motion moved by House Majority Leader, Prof. Julius Ihonvbere, albeit with amendments. One such amendment, proposed by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, urged President Tinubu to review the emergency status within the six-month period initially announced.

Additionally, the House passed a motion by Rep. Ben Etanabene (Delta State) to take over the legislative functions of the Rivers State House of Assembly, citing Section 11(4) of the Nigerian Constitution. Meanwhile, Deputy House Spokesperson Phillip Agbese called for the formation of a National Peace and Reconciliation Committee to mediate between the warring political factions.

The Green Chamber’s resolution came hours after Speaker Tajudeen Abbas read President Tinubu’s letter formally notifying lawmakers of his decision. The President, in a late-night broadcast on Tuesday, had declared a State of Emergency, citing a breakdown of law and order in Rivers State. As part of the declaration, Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and members of the state assembly were suspended for six months, while retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas was appointed as sole administrator.

The development has sparked mixed reactions across the country. While some Nigerians view Tinubu’s move as constitutional, others argue that it undermines democratic governance.
