On this Day in 1965:

The Gambia grew to become the thirty seventh sovereign state in Africa and the final of Britain’s West African colonies to realize independence.

The Union Jack was lowered for the final time and changed with the crimson, white, blue and inexperienced of the Gambian nationwide flag.

The day marked the tip of Britain’s occupation of The Gambia that began in 1765.
