Gambian lawmaker who needs to unseat Barrow in 2026 polls vows to compensate victims of Jammeh regime 







Bakary Badjie, the National Assembly member for Foni Bintang, who needs to unseat President Adama Barrow within the 2026 election, has vowed to compensate victims of the Jammeh regime if he wins the polls.

Mr Badjie’s candidacy gained consideration after he introduced his resolution to run for the presidency. He was expelled by Jammeh who has since been dwelling in exile in Equatorial from the APRC social gathering for the latter’s resolution. He claimed Badjie acted unilaterally in making his resolution.

In response, Badjie stated he was elected as an impartial candidate and doesn’t want anybody’s permission to run for president.

At his first press convention, he apologised to the victims and sought their forgiveness. He promised to supply compensation and set up a reconciliation committee geared toward bridging divisions amongst Gambians for the sake of peace and growth.

“When I come to power, one of the first things I would do is to compensate the victims, because this government [the Barrow government] has shown no interest in doing so.”

He additionally accused the Barrow authorities of neglecting the victims, accusing it of providing solely empty guarantees relating to reparations.
