The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and FIFA have launched a landmark project set to transform Nigerian football, both on and off the pitch. The groundbreaking ceremony for the FIFA-funded players’ hostel and new training pitches took place on Tuesday at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja, with top government officials and football stakeholders in attendance.
NFF President Ibrahim Gusau described the project as a turning point for Nigerian football. Once completed, the facilities will provide world-class accommodation for national teams during international duties, while the new grass and artificial pitches will serve as a talent development hub. The initiative aims to enhance player preparation for major tournaments, ensuring improved performance and sustainability.
Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, hailed the project as a historic moment for Nigeria’s sports sector. “For the first time, we are witnessing a major boost to Nigerian football, thanks to FIFA’s intervention and the efforts of the NFF and the National Sports Commission (NSC). This initiative will not only cut costs but also generate revenue while enhancing the efficiency of our football development,” he stated.
Mallam Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the NSC, urged the NFF to ensure the timely completion of the project. He also suggested a concession plan for professional maintenance, ensuring the facilities remain in top condition for years to come.
Representing FIFA, Johnson Fernandez reaffirmed FIFA’s support for Nigerian football, citing the country’s rich history of producing world-class talents. He expressed confidence in the Gusau-led NFF’s vision for football growth.
Dignitaries at the event included Chairman Senate Committee on Sports Abdul Ningi, former Sports Minister Sunday Dare, Comptroller General of Customs Bashiru Adewale Adeniyi, former Edo State Deputy Governor Comrade Philip Shuaibu, and ex-internationals Victor Ikpeba and Samson Siasia.
With smiles and optimism, attendees agreed that this initiative signals a new era for Nigerian football. The two-pronged project is expected to help Nigeria reclaim its position as a dominant force in African and global football.
